Affects

AdBlue/SCR System

AdBlue (also known as DEF — Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is a liquid injected into the exhaust system of modern Euro 6 diesel cars to reduce harmful NOx emissions. The AdBlue warning light tells you the fluid is running low or there's a fault with the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system.

Low AdBlue level:

The most common reason for the light — you're simply running low. Most cars display a warning when around 1,500–2,500 miles of AdBlue remain. A second, more urgent warning appears when you have less than 500 miles of range. If you run the tank completely empty, the engine will start one more time — and then refuse to restart. The car is designed this way to ensure emissions compliance.

Topping up AdBlue:

AdBlue is widely available at UK petrol stations, motor factors, and Halfords (typically £5–8 for 5 litres, which adds around 3,000–5,000 miles of range depending on your car). The filler is usually near the fuel filler or in the boot. It's labelled — do not confuse it with diesel. Never add diesel to the AdBlue filler or AdBlue to the diesel filler — both cause expensive damage.

AdBlue fault light (not just low level):

Some cars show a separate fault warning rather than just a low level warning. This could indicate a faulty AdBlue pump, a failed NOx sensor, a faulty SCR catalyst, or an adulterated/incorrect fluid in the tank. These faults require diagnostic reading and often specialist repair (£200–1,000+).

Make-specific notes:

BMW: The AdBlue filler is usually in the boot. BMW displays how many miles until you must refill. Running out will prevent the engine from restarting.

Mercedes: Shows a range countdown. Mercedes CDI engines from 2016 onwards all use AdBlue. The filler is typically near the spare wheel or in the boot.

VW/Audi: Most VAG group Euro 6 diesel cars use AdBlue. Some smaller engines (1.6 TDI on some models) don't — check your handbook.

Important: Only use automotive-grade AdBlue (ISO 22241 standard). Garden or agricultural urea solutions are not suitable and will damage the SCR system.
