The Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) warning is essentially the same as the AdBlue warning — both refer to the fluid used in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines.

This warning appears on larger, more premium diesel vehicles — particularly Mercedes, BMW, and Audi models with larger diesel engines. The SCR system injects small amounts of DEF (AdBlue) into the exhaust stream where it reacts with NOx to produce harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

Two different warnings to distinguish:

A LOW LEVEL warning means you need to top up. Most cars give you a generous warning period — typically 1,500–2,500 miles remaining. Top up with automotive grade AdBlue (ISO 22241 compliant) available at most UK petrol stations.

A FAULT or SYSTEM warning means there's a problem beyond just the fluid level. This could be a faulty NOx sensor, faulty DEF pump, frozen DEF (it freezes at -11°C — a concern in very cold UK winters), contaminated fluid, or a failing SCR catalyst.

What happens if you run completely out:

The engine will start one final time. After that, it will not restart until DEF is added. This is legally mandated compliance — the car won't operate without its emissions control system functional.

SCR system faults are expensive:

NOx sensors cost £150–400. The DEF pump is £200–600. The SCR catalyst itself (separate from the DPF) can cost £800–2,000. Always have fault codes read before authorising any parts replacement — the fault code often pinpoints the component directly.
