Ford uses the standard engine outline symbol for the engine management light across all models. Ford vehicles have some specific known fault patterns that are worth knowing about.
Common Ford engine management light causes:
EcoBoost timing chain failure (1.0 EcoBoost) — the three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost engine fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, and C-Max from 2012 onwards has a known timing chain issue, particularly the coolant hose to the turbo that can fail and allow coolant into the engine. Combined with timing chain wear, this is a serious (and costly) known fault. Engine management light on a 1.0 EcoBoost should be treated with urgency — check coolant level immediately.
Throttle body fault — Ford Focus and Fiesta models with drive-by-wire throttle bodies commonly develop carbon build-up causing P0505 (idle fault) and illuminating the engine management light. Cleaning the throttle body is a relatively straightforward fix.
EGR valve fault on TDCi engines — the Ford 1.5 and 2.0 TDCi engines accumulate EGR carbon. Cleaning or replacement resolves this.
DPF fault on TDCi — Ford TDCi models used mainly for town driving develop DPF blockages. Ford shows a message in the instrument cluster rather than a dedicated DPF light: "Diesel Filter — See Handbook."
Powershift dual-clutch gearbox fault — the Ford PowerShift (fitted to Focus and Fiesta 2008–2018) is known for shudder, jerky low-speed changes, and gearbox warning lights. Ford issued software updates and in some cases clutch replacements. If you have a Powershift Focus or Fiesta with gearbox issues, check whether the issue affects your specific vehicle.
Oxygen sensor — Ford petrol engines regularly develop upstream oxygen sensor faults causing P0130/P0135 codes and the engine management light.
