Engine Management Light On — Mercedes

Mercedes uses a two-colour system for engine warnings that's important to understand: a yellow engine management light is an advisory (fault detected, not immediately critical), while a red engine management light means stop the car immediately.

Yellow engine management light on Mercedes:

This means a fault has been logged but the car is not in immediate danger. Common causes on Mercedes:

MAF sensor — Mercedes CDI (diesel) and direct injection petrol engines are sensitive to MAF sensor faults. The 2.2 CDI engine is notorious for MAF sensor issues causing rough running, black smoke, and poor economy. A Bosch replacement MAF typically resolves this (£60–120).

EGR valve — Mercedes CDI diesels accumulate carbon in the EGR system, particularly the OM646, OM651, and OM654 engines. Symptoms include rough idle and reduced power.

Swirl flap failure — many Mercedes diesel engines have swirl flaps in the intake manifold that can fail or break off, causing fault codes, rough running, and sometimes catastrophic engine damage if a flap breaks off and enters the engine. This is a significant known issue on older CDI engines.

Injector fault — Mercedes uses piezoelectric injectors on many CDI engines. These are more complex and more expensive than solenoid injectors, costing £200–500+ each.

Red engine management light on Mercedes:

Stop the car immediately. This indicates a serious fault — most commonly oil pressure loss, overheating, or a critical engine fault. Mercedes differentiates red from yellow precisely because red requires immediate action.

On Mercedes hybrid models (EQ, E300de, GLE 350de): The system integrates engine management with the hybrid system. An engine light may relate to the high-voltage system, which requires specialist Mercedes-trained technicians.
