Engine

Volkswagen uses the standard amber engine management light (engine outline shape). On VW group cars (which includes Audi, SEAT, and Skoda on the same platforms), there are some very well-known fault patterns worth understanding.

Common VW engine management light causes:

Timing chain on 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI engines — the chain tensioner and chain on these engines are a known weakness. The chain can stretch prematurely, causing rough running, timing-related fault codes, and eventually serious engine damage if left. A rattle on startup is the early warning sign. Timing chain kit replacement is £400–800 including labour.

High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) on 2.0 TFSI — early 2.0 TFSI engines (Mk5 Golf GTI, early Audi A3/A4) had a well-documented HPFP failure issue. Symptoms include intermittent misfire, hard starting, and fuel system fault codes. Revised pump available; typical cost £300–500 fitted.

EGR valve/inlet manifold clogging on TDI diesels — VW 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI engines (the engines fitted to essentially every Golf, Passat, and Sharan diesel) accumulate carbon in the EGR valve and inlet manifold. At high mileages the manifold can become almost completely blocked. Cleaning or replacement fixes this.

DPF fault — on Euro 5+ TDI models (2009 onwards), DPF faults are common in urban-use cars. See the DPF warning light page.

Thermostat fault — VW TDI thermostats fail and cause P0128 (running cool), which the ECU also flags as an engine management fault. Thermostat replacement on VAG diesels is cheap (£30–80 part).

DSG gearbox faults — the direct shift gearbox (7-speed dry clutch DSG in particular, found in Mk6/Mk7 Golf, Polo, etc.) can cause a combined engine/gearbox warning light for mechatronic faults, clutch pack wear, or shudder issues. The 7-speed DSG requires a fluid service every 40,000 miles — not "lifetime" as VW originally stated.
