Glow Plug Warning Light — Diesel Cold Start Explained

The glow plug warning light on diesel cars is shaped like a coiled wire or spring symbol and is amber. Unlike most warning lights, seeing this light briefly on startup is completely normal.

Normal behaviour:

When you turn the ignition on (before pressing start), the glow plug light illuminates for 1–5 seconds, then goes out. This is the pre-heating cycle — the glow plugs are warming the combustion chambers to ensure reliable cold starting. Once the light goes out, start the engine. This is normal and not a fault.

In very cold weather (below 0°C), the light may stay on for up to 10 seconds before going out — also normal.

When to be concerned:

The light stays on after the engine starts — this indicates a glow plug circuit fault. One or more glow plugs may have failed, or the glow plug control relay or module has developed a fault.

The light flashes after starting — on many modern diesels, a flashing glow plug light indicates an engine management fault (similar to the engine management light). Read the fault codes to find the specific issue.

The car is hard to start in cold weather (below 5°C) — a symptom of failed glow plugs even if the light isn't illuminated.

Consequences of failed glow plugs:

In warm weather you may not notice — the engine starts fine without pre-heating. In cold weather, expect hard starting, white smoke on startup, and rough running until the engine warms up. Over time, failed glow plugs cause incomplete combustion which can foul injectors.

Repair cost:

Individual glow plugs cost £10–30 each. The main risk with replacement is that plugs on high-mileage engines can snap — particularly the BMW N47 diesel, which is notorious for glow plug removal difficulties. Labour ranges from 1 hour on accessible engines to 4+ hours on awkward ones like the BMW N47.
