Affects

Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The power steering warning light (usually a steering wheel with an exclamation mark, sometimes with the letters EPS or PS) means the power assistance has reduced or failed. Your steering will still physically work, but it will be considerably heavier — particularly at low speeds and during parking manoeuvres.

Two types of power steering systems:

Electric Power Steering (EPS) — found on most cars made after 2010. An electric motor assists the steering. The EPS warning light indicates a fault in this system. At highway speeds you may not notice much difference; at low speed and parking, the steering will feel very heavy and require more effort.

Hydraulic Power Steering — found on older cars and some current models. A pump driven by the engine belt circulates fluid to assist the steering. The warning light here (if fitted) often means low fluid or a pump fault.

Common causes of EPS faults:

Battery or voltage issue — EPS systems are sensitive to low voltage. If your battery is weak or the alternator is failing, the EPS system may cut out to protect itself. Fixing the battery or alternator often resolves the EPS light.

EPS torque sensor — a sensor in the steering column measures how much steering effort the driver is applying. Failure causes the system to default to no assistance. Common on Ford and Vauxhall.

EPS control module — the electronic module managing the power steering can fail. Often causes the light at higher mileages.

Wiring fault — the EPS system has numerous sensors and connections. Corrosion or damage to wiring is a common cause.

Common causes of hydraulic power steering faults:

Low or empty power steering fluid — the reservoir is usually near the engine bay. Topping up resolves the symptom but the underlying leak must be found.

Failed power steering pump — symptoms include a whining noise on full lock, increasing effort, and fluid leaks.

Repair costs: EPS sensor £80–200; EPS module £150–400; hydraulic pump £150–400.
