Affects

Various critical systems

Any red warning light on your dashboard requires immediate action. Unlike amber/yellow lights (which are advisory), red lights indicate a critical fault that could cause engine damage, brake failure, or a safety risk within minutes.

The universal rule: red means stop.

Pull over as soon as it is safe to do so. Turn the engine off. Do not drive to a garage with a red warning light on. Call your breakdown service.

Common red warning lights and what they mean:

Red oil pressure light (oil can symbol) — the most critical warning. Stop immediately and turn off the engine. Driving even a short distance without oil pressure causes severe, irreversible engine damage.

Red coolant temperature light or gauge in the red — engine overheating. Stop the engine immediately to avoid head gasket failure or worse.

Red battery warning light — charging system failure. You may have minutes of battery power remaining. Get to a safe stop.

Red brake warning light — stop and check immediately. Could be brake fluid loss, brake failure, or a seized brake. Do not drive.

Red engine management light (Mercedes specifically) — stop immediately. Mercedes red engine lights indicate critical faults.

Red STOP warning (often with additional text on the dashboard) — a generic critical warning that often appears alongside other red warnings. Take it seriously.

What to do:

1. Signal, slow down safely, and pull off the road. 2. Turn off the engine. 3. Stay safe — on a motorway, move away from the car and behind the barrier. 4. Call your breakdown service. 5. Do not attempt to restart and drive.

Red warning lights that are ignored or driven through can turn a £200 fix into a £5,000 engine rebuild or worse. The breakdown call costs far less.
