Seatbelt System
The seatbelt warning light and chime are designed to remind unbelted drivers to buckle up. When the light stays on even though you're wearing your seatbelt, there's usually a fault with the buckle sensor — not a reason to drive unbelted.
The seatbelt buckle switch:
Inside each seatbelt buckle is a small switch that detects when the tongue is inserted. When this switch fails, it doesn't register the belt as fastened — triggering the constant warning. On VW Golf Mk5 and Mk6 models this is a particularly common fault, with the buckle sensor failing at relatively low mileages.
Diagnosis: Plug in a diagnostic scanner and read SRS/body codes. A faulty buckle switch will store a specific code identifying which seat's buckle is faulty.
Repair: The buckle assembly needs replacing — the switch is not serviceable separately. A new buckle costs £30–80 for most cars; fitting takes 15–30 minutes (disconnect the battery first due to airbag system proximity).
Warning: The seatbelt pretensioner (explosive charge that tightens the belt in a crash) is part of the SRS airbag system. Always disconnect the battery and wait at least 10 minutes before working near seatbelt components. Treat the pretensioner with the same caution as an airbag.
