Service Interval Monitor

The service due light — often shaped like a spanner or wrench, or displaying the word SERVICE — is a reminder that your car is due for scheduled maintenance. It's not a fault; it's the car's service interval monitoring system telling you it's time for an oil change or full service.

What triggers it:

On most modern cars, the service interval is calculated based on mileage, time since last service, oil quality (monitored by sensors), and driving style. Heavy use, lots of short journeys, and aggressive driving shorten the interval. Easy motorway driving extends it.

On BMW and Mercedes, this system is particularly sophisticated — the car calculates the optimal service interval rather than using a fixed mileage. BMW's Condition Based Servicing (CBS) and Mercedes' ASSYST system will show which specific items are due (oil, filters, brake fluid, spark plugs) rather than just a generic warning.

What to do:

Book a service at your garage or a trusted independent. The time frame is flexible — you typically have 1,000–2,000 miles or a few weeks to schedule it. Don't ignore it indefinitely — engine oil degrades over time and mileage, increasing wear.

Resetting the light:

After a service, the garage should reset the service interval monitor. If they forget, you can often do it yourself — the procedure varies by make and model but usually involves holding a button while turning the ignition, or using the steering wheel controls to navigate the on-board menu.

BMW users: The spanner icon and the engine management light icon are different on BMW — make sure you're reading the right one. A spanner = service due (advisory). Engine outline = engine fault (needs attention).
