In limp mode — carefully to a garage. Not long distance.
Affects
Automatic Gearbox
The transmission or gearbox warning light indicates a fault in the automatic gearbox system. On many cars this is accompanied by the vehicle entering limp mode — a protective state where the gearbox locks into a single gear (usually 2nd or 3rd) to allow you to drive slowly to safety without further damaging the gearbox.
Limp mode — what's happening:
When the Transmission Control Module (TCM) detects a serious fault, it disables normal shifting and holds a safe gear. The car will feel sluggish and won't shift — this is intentional. You can typically drive up to 30–50 mph in limp mode to reach a garage or safe stopping point. Do not drive fast or for long distances in limp mode.
Common causes:
Low or degraded transmission fluid — the most overlooked cause. Many modern automatics are filled with "lifetime fluid" that manufacturers claim never needs changing — but at 80,000+ miles, degraded fluid causes solenoid sticking, harsh shifts, and eventually fault codes. A transmission fluid and filter service (£100–200) resolves many gearbox faults on well-maintained cars.
Faulty solenoid — automatic gearboxes use multiple solenoids to control fluid flow to clutch packs. Individual solenoid failure is relatively common and often cheaper to fix than it sounds (£100–400 depending on which solenoid and vehicle).
TCM (Transmission Control Module) fault — the electronic controller itself can fail. On VW DSG gearboxes, TCM issues are known, as are mechatronic unit failures.
Torque converter fault — the torque converter connects the engine to the gearbox. The lockup clutch inside it can fail (P0740), causing shudder and efficiency loss.
On Ford Powershift (dual-clutch automatic in Focus, Fiesta, C-Max 2009–2016): shudder, jerky low-speed behaviour, and the gearbox warning light are common and have been the subject of numerous complaints and legal action. Software updates and clutch replacement are the typical remedies.
On VW/Audi DSG: Fluid service every 40,000 miles is strongly recommended regardless of manufacturer guidance.
