Windscreen Washer System
The washer fluid warning light (usually a windscreen with water spraying) simply means the washer fluid reservoir is low or empty. This is the least urgent warning light on your dashboard.
MOT implication:
The washer system must work during an MOT inspection, and the MOT tester will check it. An empty reservoir that means the washers don't work is an MOT failure. Keep it topped up.
What to use:
Use a proper screenwash mixed with water — not just plain water. In UK winters, plain water freezes in the reservoir, pipes, and jets, causing blockages and potentially cracking the reservoir. A good screen wash contains alcohol to prevent freezing and detergents to clean road film.
Winter tip: In temperatures below 0°C, use a screen wash mixed at the correct ratio for winter use (check the bottle for temperature guidance). Many UK drivers are caught out by frozen washers on cold mornings.
Cost: Screenwash concentrate costs £2–8 and dilutes to fill the reservoir multiple times. Never use fairy washing liquid — the foam can blind you at the wrong moment and it can degrade wiper rubber.
